The History of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, or NBCAM, was launched more than 25 years ago as a collaborative effort between a number of public health organizations and government services. Every year, groups like the American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen for the Cure dedicate October to educating the public about breast cancer screenings, treatments, and the fight for the cure. October is also a major fundraising month for cancer research organizations. Many businesses donate a portion of their October profits to breast cancer groups or collect donations from their customers. You can show your support by wearing pink during October and donating to a cancer fundraising group.

Facts about Breast Cancer

Breast cancer affects one in every eight women. Approximately 220,000 new cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, and over 40,000 women die annually from this disease. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. A combination of genetic and lifestyle factors may be to blame for breast cancer, but the exact cause is unknown. Regular mammograms help catch breast cancer in its early stages, when treatments are most effective.
